The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Happy New Year!

Welcome to the year of the Dragon: the year the world ends.
With the Mayan Calendar ending, who knows what will happen this coming December.  The Earth could explode!...or something.  Regardless of the impending apocalypse, this year is ringing in with interesting prospects:
The Good - awesome things
  • My roommate is nice to me.  Together we are starting on the path to healthier diets and exercise.
  • On a similar note, Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) is set up now.  Loads of fun shall ensue.
  • I'm getting married this year and I can't wait!  I'm so excited to spend the rest of my life with my fiance; I'm eager to do the 'boring' stuff such as sitting around the house reading the paper, yard work together, and cooking together.  It will be fantastic, and I plan on keeping it that way for a long time.
  • I am happy at my place of employment.  This is pretty much a 180° change.  I'm still working for the same guy (I used to be miserable here) but I've moved to a better location.
The Bad - things that are simultaneously good and bad
  • Possibly moving my wedding forward.
This is good because I'm an instant gratification person.  I want to live with my fiance now not later.
This is bad because it sort of makes me feel overwhelmed.  I want to do this slow and steady; when I rush things I tend to make mistakes.
  • The location I moved to gives me more hours, which means less time away from work, but more money.
The Ugly - things that fail
  • Obama signed the NDAA.  The mere existence of this folly says a lot to me about our government.  Government is steadily losing direction and the general public seems to be unaware.  I ran into someone the other day who had no idea what the NDAA even was.
  • The FDA decided "voluntary reform" was better than regulation of antibiotic use in animal feed.  The question here is, "what is this doing to our food?" and all of the implications that come with that.
  • Government.
So, for me it looks like a year filled with potential, even with the bad.  I don't know exactly how long the NDAA is going to actually be in effect.  The backlash is pretty strong from what I've seen; we might see a repeal or something similar down the road.  Then again, we might not.  It's just a little scary.
As for the "voluntary reform" bologna the FDA issued; I'll just be careful where I get my meat.  To some extent I may not be able to avoid it, but I can try my best.

What I resolved to do this year:
  • Save more money.
  • Move my finances to a local credit union rather than a national bank.
  • Swim on a regular basis.  Or do some form of exercise.
  • Be more charitable and generally nice to others.
  • Pray daily.
  • Find some way to attend mass more than just once a week.
  • Do more art.
  • Be an awesome wife.
  • Start renting to own the house I live in.
  • Eat better (actually take it seriously this time)
And that's about it other than general self-improvements I will omit because I feel they're pretty standard to everyone, and not really new this year but a reoccurring theme throughout the years.

What did you resolve to do?
And do you think the world will end?

  1. This year I am going to:

Lose the rest of the baby weight.

Develop my friendships and do a better job of staying in touch with people.

    Pray more.

As for the world, no, I don't think it's any more likely to end than any other year.

On another note, don't be too overwhelmed about the wedding, whenever it ends up being. Think of it this way, when you get married, you get a white dress, a mass with music, flowers and a reception, and it takes months to plan, but when you have a funeral, you get a black dress, a mass with music, flowers, and a reception, and it takes less than a week. Not that a wedding is just like a funeral, but I think that people make an unnecessary amount of fuss about weddings and the idea that EVERYTHING has to be "perfect". The wedding mass is pretty much set for you, and the choir and servers have done this loads of times before, and that's the important part of the wedding. as for the reception, you have a whole crowd of experienced people to help you out in any way you need. Just set the date for the time that you want, and don't worry, whatever happens, you will still be married to a really great guy.

  2. Hannah, you might enjoy the book Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds by Charles Mackay. The world was going to end something like three or four times before now.
Also, 'Tulipmania' is amusing to me. I found it in that book. :)

  3. Sounds good, I'll have to look that up. As a teen, I used to worry about the end of the world. then I read this quote from an ancient Babylonian manuscript, ".....children no longer listen to their parents, and everyone wants to write a book, and it's clear that the end of the world is close at hand." I realized that people always think it's the end of the world.
